Rio Celeste Hiking Tour Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world! Imagine yourself in front of a turquoise blue waterfall surrounded by lush, emerald green jungle.

  1. Trailhead: The hiking typically starts at the Tenorio Volcano National Park entrance, where you’ll pay an entrance fee and receive a map of the park. The trailhead is well-marked, and there are usually park rangers available to provide information and answer questions.
  2. Length and Difficulty: The hike to Rio Celeste is a moderately challenging trek, covering a distance of approximately 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) one way. It can take anywhere from 3 to 4 hours to reach the highlight of the hike, the “Teñideros,” where the two rivers merge and create the stunning blue color. The trail is generally well-maintained, with some steep and muddy sections.
  3. Scenic Highlights:
    • Teñideros: This is the first major highlight of the hike, where you’ll witness the magical moment when the two rivers with different mineral compositions converge, causing a vivid blue hue. This is where Rio Celeste gets its name, which means “Light Blue River” in Spanish.
    • Waterfall: A short hike downstream from Teñideros will take you to the breathtaking Rio Celeste waterfall. The cascade plunges into a vibrant turquoise pool, creating a picture-perfect scene. Swimming is not allowed here, but you can enjoy the view and take stunning photographs.
    • Los Tenideros: Further along the trail, you’ll encounter another spot called “Los Tenideros,” where you can see the point where the chemical reaction occurs.
  4. Flora and Fauna: As you hike through the lush rainforest of the national park, you’ll have the opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife, including birds, insects, frogs, and maybe even monkeys. The park is also home to a rich diversity of plant species.
  5. Weather: The weather in the area can be unpredictable, so it’s advisable to check the forecast and bring appropriate clothing, including rain gear, comfortable hiking shoes, and insect repellent.
  6. Conservation: Tenorio Volcano National Park is a protected area, and it’s essential to respect the park rules and regulations to preserve its natural beauty for future generations.

The Rio Celeste hiking is a popular outdoor adventure located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park, in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica. This hike is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, particularly its vibrant turquoise-blue river, which is a result of a unique chemical reaction that occurs when two clear rivers, Rio Buenavista and Quebrada Agria, mix with minerals from the volcanic rocks in the area.
